My buddy and driver Mark suggested that we go to bear valley for our board meeting. The previous night the news states that the sierras will get about 8-10 inches of snow on friday. I look up the road conditions and highway 80 was closed. Wheres Bear Valley at? It's eastward, north of yosemite. South of dodge ridge. On highway 4, yes the highway 4 to antioch / oakley. Ok sounds good, but the 5am departure time did not. Luckily we did what we did, it was pouring rain in the central valley, by the time we got to Murphys, CA (2100ft elevation) it was snowing. Snowing hard, and when we reached Arnold, CA (4000ft elevation), it was whiteout conditions. At breakfast we hear that both highway 80 and 50 were closed! What a good choice, we arrive around 10am. We get up the lift and our boards won't move on the snow, the powder is so dry it stuck to my board like no other. It hits me that maybe i need some wax, i could stand on one end, flexing the board while pointing downhill and not budge at all. So i had to ride the lift back down, it felt like the ride of shame. First time ever riding back down on a lift, i do say it was pretty, but everybody looks at you while they pass by. After the waxing it was 12:40pm. Finally time to own.
And own we did, i got up to elbow high in powder. All that board pressing that i was doing last year helped out. As long as the front tip is up it was free flowing. Of course the few times it caught on something that i dump i'm 2-3 feet deep, stuck like chuck. The hiking around and getting out of the deep stuff was the killer parts. But when the sun came out a handful of times it was quite a site. A winter wonderland that i haven't seen in 3 years, yep i haven't touched powder for that long of a time.
We rode till closing and got back home around 9. Now my shoulders and calves are feeling it. Man its good to be in the snow once again.
